Is your website paying for itself? I believe that most websites are not. If that is the case then you really do need to get a hold of the problem as the simple fact is that the internet isn’t going away. The purpose of having a website is to make you money. This doesn’t mean that you have to sell products through it, it can be a brochure, explaining in more detail exactly what you can do for your customers. This isn’t a subject to run away from, however there are lots of sharks in the water and as always, you need to be very careful about where you get your advice from.

Websites need to be simple to navigate yet easy to buy from. The first step, however is to make sure that they can be found on the internet. With over 200 million websites on the net right now, it is little wonder that most sites end up in the nether regions and never get visited. You need to target customers with surgeon like precision as people search for exactly what they want. In many cases to make things worse, they are also looking for the information for free. Some will buy from another store for as little as 1p difference in price as well.

Search terms or keywords are the very life blood of the internet. You need to understand the exact words that your customers use to find businesses like yours on the internet. Most people use the internet to find free information- so give then something for free. Whether its a free report, a free survey, a free consultation or something else relevant to your business, make sure you understand the psyche and start to build up a relationship with your customer.

Have you tried looking for your own business on the internet? Put yourself in the shoes of your customers and type in to Google the sort of keywords or phrases that they will put in to the search box if they are looking for a business right now. Use action words like buy, recommended, good, best, followed by the description of your business. For example, “Buy carpets in Cardiff”. The results will probably shock you, however now is the time to do something about it.

There are two sorts of search engine optimisation that need to be done. The on page optimisation covers the actual content and associated settings for your website. This includes things like the title tags, mea descriptions, etc. The off page optimisation is about the popularity of the website to create inbound links. This includes press releases, directory submissions, article submission, etc. You really cannot afford to leave this aspect of your business to chance. Get it right now and you can stay ahead of the competition for longer, leave it slip and the competition will eat your lunch all day long.
