When businesses are looking to eliminate defects in their production process, and improve the quality of the products that they are manufacturing, they often turn to Six Sigma. Six Sigma is a set of processes and tools that will help you analyze your current production process, determine what the causes of the defects are, and help you determine the ideal solution to the problems. Six Sigma is not something you can just decide to implement on your own though. Their is extensive training needed to understand the processes and tools that are involved, and the more experience you have using Six Sigma, the more likely you will be to achieve your desired results. Below is an introduction that will outline the steps in the Six Sigma process for those who are unfamiliar with Six Sigma.
The first step of the Six Sigma Process is to have support and understanding of the top-level management and leaders of the organization. Without this understanding and support, the company will not achieve its goals in the end. Gaining this support is going to require some extra funds for consultants in many cases, because someone will need to work with management to get them on board before Six Sigma projects can begin.
After you have the support of your senior management, the next step is to make sure all of the employees in your company are on board as well. Most people are resistant to change, especially when the change is forced on them. If you include as many employees as possible in the Six Sigma process then they will have a say in the changes that are being considered, and therefore they will be more willing to implement these changes when they are finalized.
After you have the approval and involvement of the upper level management and the employees of the organization, it is time to embark on the actual Six Sigma Process. This begins with collecting data. The number of defects per unit (i.e. 2 customer complaints for every 20 transactions) needs to be documented, as does the process itself, from both a customer and employee perspective. Everything must be quantified before moving on to step four. Step four is the analysis stage of Six Sigma Projects. Analyzing the data you have collected will help to establish potential solutions to your problems.
After you have completed all of your analysis, determined what the cause of the problems are, and what the ideal solutions are that will eliminate the problems, it is time to implement your solution. Once implemented you need to continue to monitor your processes to determine if your solution is having the desired impact. Six Sigma is a very detail oriented process that requires not only an understanding of the Six Sigma tools and processes, but also a through understanding of your organization’s processes. Six Sigma can have a significant impact on your business, you can reduce expenses and increase profits by eliminating defects, and you will also have more satisfied customers.
