depends on what you are advertising..the phone book is not that good for advertising…to expensive…if you have a local craigslist.org it is good too..again..depending what you are advertising…

Local advertising is a pretty tough game, because #1 nobody cares and #2 everybody is trying to sell it in a thousand different goofy incarnations.

First off, what are you advertising? Services? Durable goods? Dog food? An amazing opportunity where you find six people, who find six people, who find six people, and retire in six figures within six months?

More information would be good, and I don’t know how anyone could tell you anything without something to go on. But, maybe =)

Forget about anything remotely related to macro-advertising or branding unless it’s an immediate, great fit for what you’re doing. It’s not too likely.

If I were you? Running an ad in the newspaper will get business from people who are immediately looking to buy what you have, with very little effect on others unless you are exceptionally clever. But unless you really have no market, then it WILL ring the cash register, and fast.

Mass mailing postcards can get technical, and expensive, but if you’re willing to learn what you’re doing and have something good to offer it can be a real jackpot.

Tacking your business card onto corkboards and at the entrances to restaurants will do NOTHING, but you’ll feel like you’ve done work, so it’s very dangerous.

Your best choice? Knocking doors and making phone calls. Second-best? Buy Guerrilla Marketing by Jay Conrad Levinson. Order a used copy through half.com =)

There are a lot of ideas at. All deal with local advertising. Much depends on your budget and what you are trying to accomplish. You need to know your target audience and what your goals are before choosing an advertising medium. You will find lots of free advice on my web site, much more than I could cover in an answer here.
